The Serology DNA Laboratory provides precise and reliable forensic analysis, playing a crucial role in criminal investigations and legal proceedings. Operating in compliance with key legislation, including the Criminal Procedure Act, Offensive Weapons Act, Evidence Ordinance, and Knives Ordinance. We specialize in DNA analysis of case evidence to assist law enforcement and judicial authorities. Our DNA testing services cover a broad spectrum of criminal and relatedness cases, including:
- Murder cases
- Sexual Assault Cases
- Burglary Cases
- Paternity and Maternity Testing
- Kinship Analysis
- Identification of Unidentified Human Remains
- Missing Person Identification
- Body fluids/DNA traces found in vehicles involved in hit-and-run accidents
The laboratory specializes in the analysis of various biological materials related to case productions, primarily submitted by the court and judicial medical officers. The biological materials analyze include blood, semen, hair, bones, human remains (e.g. tissue samples), teeth, nail clippings, vaginal swabs, penile swabs, saliva, touch DNA samples (from handled objects), and biological substances found on specific items. In addition to handling case submissions, involved in crime scene investigations for complex cases.
Before DNA analysis, conduct extensive identification of body fluids and human remains using various scientific techniques. These include colorimetric methods, immunochromatographic assays, specialized light sources, and other advanced tests for body fluid identification. Additionally, perform other preliminary examinations such as microscopic analysis of hair samples to distinguish human hair from animal hair or fibers, blood pattern analysis on crime scenes and suspected items, and the identification of body fluids in vehicles involved in criminal activities.
Once the sample is identified, follow a precise DNA analysis workflow that includes DNA extraction, DNA quantification, PCR amplification, and capillary electrophoresis. This process utilizes internationally recognized kits and cutting-edge instruments, such as the Applied Biosystems 3500 series Genetic Analyzer, to ensure accurate DNA profiling. In addition to routine DNA analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis is performed only in specific cases.
Results interpretation is performed using advanced software to ensure accurate and reliable outcomes. The final scientific report is compiled using statistical analysis to determine the likelihood of the DNA profile occurring within the Sri Lankan population, employing specialized software for this purpose.
Our comprehensive services ensure accurate DNA analysis, supporting criminal investigations and legal proceedings with reliable scientific finding.
